Range your subject
When taking photos of an elephant or other huge animal, take a portrait shot; include one more with the general habitat in context to the subject, then another with close-up detail, such as horns and face.

Spear Camera
No photographer enthusiast should take up a photographic safari with only one camera. Additional camera is just a small price you are paying for the extra protection in case you're main camera fail or atleast go for a small size 35mm camera.

Focussing
Use auto focus over manual focus. The fastest auto focus system is important on safari when the action starts.

Digital Camera
Digital cameras have been on the market for several years now. If you are considering getting a digital camera to photograph birds, get one that has the longest zoom length as possible.

Lenses
Go for the rapid and best quality lenses available. It is very important to protect your lenses with a filter. At minimum you should use an UV filter. Prefer an 81B to an UV filter that gives bright colors.
However, tripods can be very effective when photographing the night shots around the camps and lodges.

Film Requirements
Kodachrome 64-slide film or Fujichrome 100 for most daylight shots in open region is recommended. With longer lenses, which admit less light, or for low light situations around dawn and dusk, 400 ASA (or higher) are also recommended. While taking pictures in low light conditions or evening campfire, flash will be of great use. Keep your film in a lead foil bag to protect it from heat.

Other important items
Don't forget to keep Wet / Dry anti-bacterial wipes, Flashlight, Micro-cassette recorder and extra tapes, Extra Camera, Camera batteries, Labels for film, Lens cleaner and tissue, Sunglasses, Flash, Film and Model release forms.
